Being square in the digital domain, advances here are coming at a furious pace and prices are dropping. A little Panasonic DVD player with 192kHz/24 bit upsampling DACs sounds awfully good. Don't pay attention to model names as product life span is fleeting, such is the pace of improvement.Processors
Completely in the digital domain, processors can only go down in price and up in performance. Don't spend a lot up front unless you can afford it.Bryston Nobody has said anything sounds better than the SP1.7. Expensive. We sell it.

Anthem Excellent by all accounts. Pretty expensive. Buy through their dealer base.
Receivers
Pioneer Model VSX 49 receiver with rudimentary room correction. Sounds fabulous for home theater and just slightly less so for music. Simplifies your system with an all-in-one-package (amps/processor) and also allows for external amps for the front channels. Buy it through the dealer base.Panasonic XR45 We have known for 2 years that Panasonic was coming out with a 6 x 100w product using the T1 digital chips. Finally, it is here. This is a landmark product serving notice that digital amplifiers have arrived. 9 pounds and 6 x 100w? It is a new world indeed. Oh, the sound. Once you battle past the menu system to defeat the 100Hz filter and setup for a simple stereo, the sound quality is amazing. The bottom end is staggering. Reach, power, pitch definition. It is all there. The price: $350 or so, street price. Killer, killer, killer.
Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon etc. Receivers are getting very good these days once they go over $1500 so if you are on a budget or want it simple, this can be a very good way to go.
