HIGH END AUDIO
Different listeners place emphasis on different audio characteristics but whatever they are, those characteristics must combine to almost make the audiophile believe they are hearing the music live.
Newform Ribbon loudspeakers were designed to deliver a fully involving musical experience. More in depth technical explanations can be found under The Technology but the fundamental design goals are these.
To produce a range of loudspeakers which deliver the detail and dynamics, the life of the music, in practical sizes which will both fit and work well in the average room when driven by a wide variety of tube and solid state amplifiers and receivers. To deliver the involvement with the music with a very low level of fatigue so the music can be enjoyed for hours at a time whether at high or low volume. To make the speakers music type and reproduction format independent. That is, to sound great no matter what the music, no matter what the source.
CD, turntable, tape, DVD, stereo, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, DTS, cable, satellite, laser disc. If a format is made to be played in the home, Newform Ribbon loudspeakers will do a superb job with it. How? By being extremely neutral. Coloured loudspeakers sound magical on some cuts of some music but are obviously deficient on others. A truly great loudspeaker does a great job with all sources.
But neutral loudspeakers have to be more than neutral at the drivers' surface, they have to be neutral in the listening room. Once we have exploited the benefits of film diaphragms to create a superior sound wave, there is the critical task of delivering that wave with maximum integrity into the room and to the listeners ears. Aside from the obvious benefits that derive from being a Ribbon or film driver, there is the issue of diffraction. Our Ribbons have the smallest acoustic profile of any driver operating from 1 kHz up. When it comes to acoustic profile, the less you see, the more you hear.
The entire structure is only 3 1/4" wide and 2 1/2" deep. It is heavily beveled at the front and the diaphragm is within 1/8" of the front of the structure. Given the narrow width of the diaphragm (dispersion is a function of diaphragm width and wavelength), there is very little to interfere with extremely even off-axis response.
Excellent and very even off-axis dispersion patterns are prime contributors to a deep and well-focused soundstage. The clarity, which is created by our narrow film diaphragm, is maintained by the absence of anomalies as the waveform moves beyond the loudspeaker structure and into the room. Once into the room, they will not be degraded by ceiling and floor reflections because the wave spreads out in a broad horizontal strata which covers a wide seating area while avoiding ceiling reflections. The music arrives with its life and inner detail intact.
When creating Newform Ribbons the design objective was to eliminate problems rather than try to engineer around them. Once disrupted, a musical sound wave can never be fully reconstructed. Therefore, we designed the drivers to produce the proper shaped wave and we designed very narrow, shaped enclosures to minimize degradation as the wave moves into the room. We designed the drivers to be under-stressed so they could operate with simple crossovers. The drivers operate in their natural ranges which means they don't beam or break up anywhere near the part of the music spectrum in which they are being used. All of our loudspeaker systems are two way (plus in some cases a subwoofer) which are elegantly simple designs using minimal signal processing crossovers.
Well thought out simplicity will ultimately be more faithful to the musical experience than the most complex array of compensators. Our Ribbon drivers are not simple but they allow a design simplicity which offers full musical involvement.
The musical performance of Newform Ribbon loudspeakers is high end by any standard. Don't dismiss these deceptively simple audio systems merely because they cost a fraction of your previous components. In Newform's case state-of-the-art can mean both improved performance and reduced price of admission.
