HOME THEATER LOUDSPEAKERS
Today, a home theater system can be a superb music system centered by a video screen. Pure audio will be the same system with the video turned off.
Home theater formats make some specific demands on loudspeakers which in no way diminishes their high fidelity potential. The home theater standards of Dolby Digital, THX and DTS all demand loudspeakers with limited vertical dispersion, wide horizontal dispersion and great dynamic capability. These specifications will improve soundstaging focus and clarity in a stereo system. The new fully discrete formats (Dolby Digital and DTS) add the requirement that speakers must be mono-polar (sound comes only from the front).
Newform Research new technology Ribbon loudspeakers are unique in their ability to limit vertical dispersion and yet offer very wide horizontal coverage to the point where few people will feel the need for center channel speakers (most Newform owners will experience a seamlessly coherent soundfield using the "phantom" mode which is available on every surround sound processor). The complexity, compromised performance and expense of a center channel can then be avoided. A center channel can always be added so the possibility of adding one isn't lost forever, merely avoided until the circumstances warrant it's inclusion in the system.
Our new Ribbons also are unique in that they are the only speakers to offer the transparency and detail of the classic ribbon and electrostatic speakers in a monopolar (and small and easy to drive) full range system. The large panel speakers are dipoles (sound comes out the front and rear) whose rear wave, when reflected back to the listener some 5 to 15 milliseconds after the front wave arrives, significantly reduces the precision and coherence of the soundfield and the soundsource localization effect.
That is why the new discrete formats recommend monopolar loudspeakers only as the main fronts.
The scale of the audio image is also critical as it must be at least as large as that of the video screen image. Looking up to the video image and listening down to the audio image from short loudspeakers introduces a discontinuity of perception. For a completely coherent experience the size of the audio image should at least match that of the screen.
