Atak Subwoofers

Atak subwoofers have been designed from the start as a system.  As stand alone subs they are first class.  As a subwoofer array system, they are world class.

Somewhere on this page is an ideal solution for delivering world class bass in your listening room.   The Atak subs are very heavy duty subwoofers and installed as dispersed arrays will deliver superb musical results in virtually any listening environment.

First class subwoofers not only produce the room rattling bottom end  of home theater but also the fine texture and foundation of music.  They can do so, not by providing a great deal of boom, but by adding the depth and power and palpable transients of real music.   This reduces the load on midbass drivers and produces more transparent midbass and more precise sound source resolution.

There are several obstacles to producing powerful and musical bass in any given room.  The first is dynamics.  The subwoofers have to be able to pump enough air and remain in control  to fully and accurately represent what the music calls for and music can call for a great deal of low frequency room energizing dynamics .  Secondly, because of the long wave lengths of low frequency sound, “room modes” create very uneven response in different locations in the room.   These nodes vary in severity by frequency and are impossible for even the most advanced room correction systems to fully neutralize.  Therefore minimizing the effects of room modes at the listing position is extremely difficult when only one subwoofer is employed.

The only approach which will even out and reduce these nodes is distributed subwoofers.   This is the application of multiple subwoofers in different locations in the room as recommended by THX and most custom installers.  The multiplicity of room modes from a distributed system means that many of them average out at the listening position and make optimization easier.  The result is tight but extended bass.

As far as dynamics and power are concerned, multiple subwoofers will pump far more air than a single subwoofer for more effortless and natural bass.

The Newform Atak subs are passive (ie the built-in amplifier has been removed) 12” designs which utilize a cast aluminum frame driver with  a 3” voice coil and a 106 oz (3kg) magnet.   In the case of the 10” with passive models, the magnet is  212 oz (6kg).

In both cases, the well finished black cabinets are very small (12” model is a 14” cube and the 10” with passive is 12” x 13”)  and very easy to conceal in a room.  Subwoofers being black boxes are best seen as invisible in terms of decor.  A single subwoofer with similar output capability would have to have  two 18” drivers in a very large and very noticeable enclosure.

The subwoofer systems we are offering consist of 4 12” passive subwoofers, an 1100w (bridged Crown amplifier) and a Behringer DCX2496 digital crossover along with a terminal panel and cables.

These systems can be downsized with price reduction options.  If your receiver or processor has room correction that works well for low frequencies (not all are designed for this) then you can omit the Behringer digital crossover.  If your room cannot possibly accommodate 4 subwoofers then the number can be reduced to 3 or even 2.  If you are tolerant of slight cosmetic imperfections then a further saving is available.

This system contains everything and is ideally run off your receiver or pre-pro subwoofer output (or left and right outputs from your preamplifier, CD or DVD player).

Warranty is two years on the subwoofers and the manufacturers warranty on the Behringer and Crown electronics.

Prices are:

Atak Sub 12 full package with 4 subwoofers, Crown XLS 1000 amplifier, Behringer DCX2496 digital crossover, XLR/RCA interconnects, terminal board, 4 x 20 feet of 10 ga speaker cable with banana plugs.

$1830 plus shipping (and HST in Canada).

Without the Behringer crossover:  $1490 plus shipping and HST in Canada.

If you have a minimum 200w/ch amplifier with lots of bottom end grunt, you could consider omitting the Crown which takes the priced down to $1140.

Cosmetic Seconds Subs with full system: $1555 plus shipping and HST in Canada.

How did Newform manage to put togther such a phenomenal deal?  We came across a large number of subwoofers from a high end but bankrupt manufacturer which had been recalled due to faulty amplifiers.  These retailed for between $1100.00 and $1600.00 each.  We have pulled the questionable amps and made the subs passive.  Acoustically these subwoofers are A1 with a full 2 year warranty with one way shipping.

Oval 30 Ribbon

The Oval 30 Ribbon is designed for use in a Coaxial Ribbon LineSource system but will work exceptionally well in any conventional Ribbon application.  It has the high and linear impedance and the expected transparency, dynamics and detail from a Newform Ribbon.  A low crossover point makes it easy to work with any midbass of 7" or under.

Ribbon Monitor 58

Ribbon Monitor 58

The Ribbon Monitor 58 produces Ribbon transparency from a highly aesthetic package.  This is the smallest loudspeaker you can buy with a full 8" Ribbon tweeter.  It's small footprint and wide dispersion allow great placement flexibility while still maintaining a superb soundstage.  The use of a 8" Ribbon and single 5" heavy duty Peerless woofer assures high dynamics and great clarity.  Bass reach is exceptional in this size of loudspeaker.

The Ribbon Monitor 58 can be used in virtually all rooms in most ranges of systems from pure stereo in a dedicated music system to full surround sound in a large home theater system.  A subwoofer would be required in larger rooms or in a home theater installation.

As with all Newform Ribbon loudspeakers, superb results can be achieved with a wide range of tube and solid state electronics.

R45 Ribbon

The R45 is a classic design Ribbon used on our R645v3 model.  It has thousands of fans around the world.

The R45 is designed as a top mount Ribbon for use above the cabinet housing the midbasses.  Good efficiency, wide dispersion and superb soundstaging are the basis for the R45s classic status.

Simply put, nothing gets out of the way of the music like an R45 system.

For speaker kit builders, a simple 6dB (single capacitor) crossover and good quality midbasses are pretty much the only ingredients necessary to assure superbly musical results.  Aim for a crossover of around 1kHz and when placing the speakers, try and give them as much air as possible.  Very high end audio in a stereo or home theater system can be achieved with very modest effort and investment.

Ribbon 8 Baffle Mount

Ribbon transparency with baffle mount practicality and aesthetics.  The Ribbon 8 allows a speaker kit builder to make a conventional looking speaker cabinet with the detail of a large planar loudspeaker.

The Ribbon 8 has very high impedance, good efficiency and, like all Newform Ribbons, has no transformer or need to re-stretch the diaphragm.  Like the rest of it's family, the R8 offers very high dynamics and very wide horizontal dispersion.

When coupled with 6 1/2" or smaller midbass drivers, the R8 will deliver seamless off axis dispersion for a very broad sweetspot.

This allows a more conventional speaker system to be built around it, whether for high fidelity stereo or audiophile home theater.

The Ribbon 8 is practical Ribbon magic - a superb Ribbon tweeter that is easy to install and easy to integrate with any quality midbass driver due to its high sensitivity and low crossover point.

Why settle for a dome tweeter when you can have the musical transparency and room acoustics advantages of a very dynamic Ribbon?

Oval 15 Ribbon

The Oval 15 is designed for use in a Coaxial Ribbon LineSource system but will work exceptionally well in any conventional Ribbon application.  Very high impedance and the expected transparency, dynamics and detail from a Newform Ribbon.  A low crossover point makes it easy to work with any midbass of 7" or under.

Ribbon Pyramid 8

The Pyramid 8 takes the musical ability of the Pyramid 45 and packs it into an aesthetic package of broader appeal.   It is made for the seated listener looking for an extremely high level of musical purity in their stereo audio system or home theater surround sound system.  Suitable for any corner of a surround sound or two channel hifi system, the Pyramid 8 offers a very high level of dynamics and transparency and large acoustic footprint into a very small physical footprint.

Ribbon Pyramid 45

A stand-alone speaker of unique visual and musical character, the Pyramid 45 will serve beautifully in a stereo hifi or home theater with audiophile capability.  Very high output levels combined with a superbly musical character, the Ribbon Pyramid offers fine transparency at high volumes or low.  A broadly accomplished loudspeaker with a very small footprint given it's musical potential.
