The Basic Black speaker models correspond exactly to their higher end namesakes in configuration but differ in midbass drivers and cabinet construction. The Ribbons are the same as are the crossovers. And they only come in black.
Our v3 and formed midbass cabinet technologies have certainly raised the bar for loudspeaker enclosures but they are costly and time consuming to produce. Also, our favourite midbass driver, the ScanSpeak 7" 8545 is a brilliant transducer but predictably expensive.
As we have developed the breakthrough Coaxial LineSource speaker systems, costs have escalated. Whereas the R-series models 630v3 and 645v3 use one midbass cabinet per side and either one or two ScanSpeaks, the LineSource Reference uses 3 or 4 midbass (or more) cabinets and at least 6 ScanSpeaks per side.
Even though they exceed the performance of speakers many times their price, the large models are expensive by any standard. With the option of specifying the new ScanSpeak Illuminator midbasses and custom finishes, the cost level can climb to $20,000.
Newform Research has always offered higher sound quality for the audiophile $ than any other loudspeaker producer in the world. Our standard for worthwhile and distinct performance starts at world class and goes up. If a design can’t outperform it’s dollar competition, we don’t produce it.
That brings us to the Basic Black designs. These offer the same transparent highs and soundstaging as their more expensive siblings but at a much lower cost.
The practical consideration is that a subwoofer is more likely to be required. But for most people, lowering the price of admission to very high end sound to the cost level of the early ‘90s, this is a minor issue.
The main impetus for the development of the Basic Black speakers was to reduce the cost of the LineSource configuration. All models use Peerless or Vifa 6 ½" midbasses in well braced enclosures using 3/4" MDF. The vertical edges are bevelled. These cabinets still outperform industry standards at their price level for inertness and diffraction minimization. They continue to use shelf bracing, diagonal wall bracing and foam damping.
The Basic Black LineSource module houses two Vifa or Peerless 6 ½: midbasses in a 0.9 cubic foot sealed enclosure weighing 35 pounds. As with the LineSource Reference, these modules can be stacked to any height the listening room and good judgment allow.
The minimum configuration is a two module system with Oval 30 Ribbon. This is exclusively for the seated listener. More typically, a system would consist of 3 modules and an Oval 45 Ribbon with the full height system for a typical listening room being 4 modules and the Oval 45.
Guts, transparency and soundstaging unmatched by any loudspeaker remotely near the price and unmatched by most loudspeakers at any price. And the price is more affordable than ever.
