Stereo and Home Theater Complete SystemsNewform Research does not sell electronics but here are a few options to consider when looking at putting together a really good system without throwing money at the wall. The systems below show a wide spread of prices but the sound quality differences would far more narrow. The last system although costing $35,000 will rival anything on the planet in terms of sound quality (given a decent room and setup) in contrast to "prestige" ultra audio systems whose CD players alone start at $20,000.SMALL ROOM, STEREO OR HOME THEATER FRONT END (10' x 14' OR SMALLER)The choice of electronic is almost limitless now. Not only that, but the quality of the sound some of the less expensive components deliver has improved remarkably. Room correction is available on some lower end Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer receivers while Panasonic continues to refine its amazing digital amplifier receivers (using the Texas Instruments digital chipset) to a very high sonic level. The current model is the SA XR-57 although the SA XR-59 has been released in Asia.A basic $400 digital amp receiver with a $200 DVD player with the LineSource Monitor or R630v3s can produce real music. The system cost is under $3000 and provides a great start to the high end audio experience. Any receiver will drive our loudspeakers, the question is sound quality of the different units. Many of the cheaper receivers have surprising good amp sections but Panasonic is probably still the champ. You'll have to spend 10x more to match it. Just be sure to end up with 60w + per channel for a normal range of listening levels. MEDIUM TO LARGE ROOM, STEREO OR HOME THEATER FRONT END (12' x 20' OR LARGER)We saw and heard the prototype of the Panasonic/TI technology 8 years ago in a private showing by the TI team in a Las Vegas hotel room at CES. The nine pound 3" high, mid-fi priced XR45 (now XR57) gives no hint of being a high end product save its sound. The digital audio wave has now hit the beach. This is a killer receiver line and represents the future of a changing home entertainment paradigm. Suitable for large rooms. If you would like to step up from there, Bryston, Bel Canto and Spectron offer different but superb performance. The other usual suspects are Mark Levinson, Krell and Tact. It would be difficult to match our loudspeakers with any of the electronics mentioned above and fail to get excellent results.
Please call or email to discuss your room, the system you are working on and both loudspeaker and amplifier options. |
