SYSTEM BUILDING: A PROGRESSIVE APPROACH

A few short words for a simple concept in a maelstrom of technological change and marketing hype.

There is a definite trend to technological development. In the digital world, things are getting better, smaller and cheaper. In the analog world, prices are not going down and may, in fact, be going up.

The digital world will be the deliverer of ultimate sound quality but this is going to take time. The Tact system is already here but at $18,000 complete, is expensive for many people.

Whatever kind of system you are working on, take some time to think through where you intend to go with it. In several years, the fidelity form digital sources and the playback through digital systems should surpass that of any previous systems without question. With digital amps, good power will become quite cheap. These trends will take time to arrive but their pervasive dominance is inevitable.

How the performance issues are greeted in the marketplace remains to be seen. Rolex is doing a booming business despite the fact that any $10 watch does as good a job. Since Newform really only looks at the performance side of the equation, maybe we are missing something on the power of prestige. The point is the industry price/performance ratio is going to change drastically. Prestige will still grab a certain portion of the market. The idle rich, it seems, are always with us.

System build one step at a time. Buy components with a strong price/performance ratio. Buying the maximum in performance will cost a great deal and the lead these components have in sound quality will be more fleeting than ever before given the rapid pace of technological progress. Early adopters know this drill but the margin of superiority that early adopters once had is getting smaller and smaller all of the time.

Buy components with an anticipated life expectancy commensurate with their price. If you believe the digital wave will sweep over audio in the next two years, spending $10,000 on speaker cables would be ill advised.

Take a building block approach to system development and make sure you look up from time to time to avoid wholesale obsolescence and massive loss of tradein value.
