Newform & Dolan

John Meyer's Newform Research's ribbon/cone hybrids have been around for a while, and, like Bruce Edgar's Edgarhorns, every revision I've heard sounded better than the previous one. The latest R645v3 has undergone some very significant changes: the midbass/bass box is now sealed rather than ported, with additional bracing and damping (Corian top), and the result is much improved blending with the ribbon and greater transparency throughout the lower midrange. Sold factory direct, $3484 delivered makes the R645v3 an astonishing bargain in today's marketplace. The partnering electronics undoubtedly made a major contribution to the fine sound of the Newforms, and are interesting in their own right: they signal the return to the business of Richard Dolan, whose PM1 preamp was highly regarded in the 1990s. The Newforms were driven by Dolan Audio SMM 120 monoblocks (US$11,500/pair), with a prototype line stage (about US$7500), Shanling CD player source. By Robert Deutsch

But there was some actual affordable Ultra class gear on hand! Newform Research was showing their R645 V3 ribbon line array speaker ($3484/pair delivered!), which features a 45" ribbon midrange/tweeter and two 7" Scan Speak midrange/bass drivers. There is a notable coherence to the sound of Newform speakers, a trait immediately recognizable whether they’re powered by a cheap Panasonic receiver (as in years past) or by the newly revitalized Dolan electronics (as at the 2006 show). Newform has made some significant changes to their cabinets, most notably going from a ported to a sealed enclosure. This is a lot of speaker for a reasonable price. - by Jason Thorpe

The Montreal Audio Show was a great success. The show itself was in a new venue - all under one roof at the Sheraton. It was the first public exposure of the v3s and they were very well received as were the Dolan Audio amps we showed with.

3. Ribbon Binding Posts.

The R45s will now be shipping with the rear binding posts on small plates screwed into the main body of the Ribbon. This will allow complete repair if the binding posts are snapped off accidentally and it will allow other types of high end binding posts to be easily added.

4. LineSource Reference

LineSource Reference systems are well along in development. These new Modular systems provide the scale and flexibility to handle almost any room larger than 200 sq. ft. We should have final details in 2 months but for now, read about the current state of development. LineSource Reference

5. Designers Rant.

Yes, the mild mannered backroom guy quietly working at his bench designing new and better loudspeakers actually does have attitude. In fact, some consider him to be a smouldering cauldron of barely suppressed engineering rage. How much anger can hide behind a vinyl pocket protector? Find out here.. Designers Rant

6. NHB

No Holds Barred, which has been under development forever it seems is still some time away. The v3 versions of the 630 and 645 and the LineSource Reference have been pushed ahead of it. Is NHB still percolating? Yes. Delivery? Hopefully before the designer dies but the problems are supplier not performance based.

7. Behringer DCX2496

The Behringer DCX2496 digital crossover, mentioned so often on our site has been “out of stock” for probably 9 months. Supposedly it will be available again in August. In any case, there are alternatives to ponder in our “Great Crossover” page. Great Crossovers

8. Surplus and Seconds

In developing the new method of making the v3 cabinets, there was one inevitable outcome for the startup of such a complicated multi-stage process. We have LOTS of seconds with various levels of defects. HELP! We haven’t had so much blemmed product since we first started shipping by UPS. If you are looking for great sound and can live with some minor (to some major) visual only blemishes, take advantage of these increased discounts. Surplus page
