Newform Research Update - May 2003
A great deal has been happening at Newform Research over the past year. We have had significant delays in several projects but we have made remarkable progress in a number of areas.In an nutshell, we have launched 3 new loudspeakers and expanded our offerings to include some of the finest electronics in the world.
In addition to the much anticipated (and delayed) No Holds Barred 58 with its radical enclosure and Ribbon technology are the relaunches of the R58 and R530.
These are completely new designs although they wear familiar designations. That is because they are intended to be used in the same applications as the first generation versions. Now with even greater fidelity, higher sensitivity and higher power handling the R58 and R530 can supply Ribbon music magic to smaller systems, smaller budgets and smaller spaces. These will keep us anchored as the maximum musical bang for the buck high end manufacturer!
The long awaited NHB58 is simply an extremely advanced loudspeaker design. From the formed cabinet-within-a-cabinet midbass enclosure to the cast steel neodymium magnet R8, every factor affecting performance both inside and outside of the diaphragms has been optimized. Diffraction, internal reflection, damping, wall rigidity are all at state of the art levels of advancement. Lets not forget the superb drive systems either. As studio monitors, or the centre speaker or surrounds of a home theater system, there is no more advanced loudspeaker on the planet.
What is very new for Newform Research is the offering of equipment we do not make ourselves. While we will offer not set packages - every customer is different - we will offer whole or partial packages including Bryston and Tact electronics with our loudspeakers. These products will be available only to people who already own or who are in the process of purchasing Newform Research loudspeakers.
Over the past dozen years we have been in contact with many companies and have had feedback form our customers on hundreds of pieces of equipment. In terms of performance, reliability and support no companies are more respected than Bryston and Tact. Because of their superb performance, they can be considered true value leaders. Although Tact and Bryston would seem to offer similar products, the applications that a user would consider these amps, pre-amps and processors for are radically different.
The addition of a Bryston component will upgrade virtually any system and give the owner peace of mind for years to come. Tact equipment is not plug and play - you make a system decision. To go all digital or not at this time. Clearly from everything we have said in the past, Newform believes the all digital route is the future. Tact delivers the future now for those who can afford it. Front projectors are now a real contender for the average home theater system because of one product: the Infocus X1. This category killer has eliminated any reason you had to stay out of the front projector market. Dump that monstrous RPTV and take back musical control of your home theater room! For $1700US why not?
Front projectors are the wild west of home entertainment as their performance/price ratio is rocketing skyward. New (and old) models are being sold and dumped through a twisted labyrinth of marketing channels with little regard for structure as traditional business and home entertainment channels of distribution collide. The same projector may carry many different names and vastly different prices. There are even Japanese models being gray marketed and dumped in the US. Newform will offer a very limited number of quality projectors from companies who support what they make.
As with everything else we make and sell, we will only offer "category killers", products which, at anywhere near their price, are the clear choice for most applications. Given the fact that front projectors are now in the digital domain, new category killers can be expected to emerge every 6 months.
Lastly, we have lowered the price of admission to true high end sound with the R58 and the R530. We have upped the ante for high end sound and design with the NHB58. And now, we are finally, after many requests, offering kits which will make tweaking our loudspeakers easier.
You asked for it and you are getting it. These external crossover terminal plates will not only accommodate virtually anything you can think of with regard to crossover components but will quickly allow a clean upgrade to active and DSP crossovers and the much ballyhooed "digital chain".
R58 A centre channel that won’t work with tube TVs because it isn’t well magnetically shielded works superbly with everything else. Performance was not sacrificed for shielding. The second best centre channel in the world. Why? Also excellent as surrounds or studio monitors, small room stereo etc. Dual Vifa midbasses and a higher sensitivity neodymium version of the much loved R8 produce a exceedingly musical and dynamic small loudspeaker. We could have gotten more bass by porting but a 50Hz crossover to a sub is probably ideal here.
