DIGITAL SYSTEMS OVERVIEW

1  2   NEXT
Having called for the arrival of all digital systems for the past 7 or 8 years, we at Newform were extremely excited by the arrival of the Panasonic XR45 digital receiver and the Behringer DCX 2496 digital crossover within months of each other. When we first offered this revolutionary combination with our R645s and described it as a world class audio system we were going out on a limb.

Although few said so, certainly many must have been dubious as to whether $1000 worth of electronics could put multi-thousand dollar, highly regarded systems on the shelf. Value maybe, but world class musical performance? Hard to believe.

Well, based on reaction we are getting from the field, we are happy to re-iterate that these systems are for real. Our $1000 digital system has been installed by extremely knowledgeable individuals who have used it to replace some of the finest amplifiers on this planet.

It isn't simple electronic superiority at play here. The digital amps sound extremely good and on the same shelf as the best conventional amps but they are not clearly superior to the best out there. That said, the Behringer - the digital crossover - is clearly superior to the large, inherently lossy passive inductors and capacitors and resistors it replaces. The digital crossover combined with the digital amps in a biamp mode (another reason for the systems advantage) yield musical results clearly superior to all but the finest electronics.

From now on, Newform Research will be shipping only upgraded main loudspeaker models so that connection to a fully digital system is just plug and play for the owner. We are completely convinced that it is only a matter of time before everyone converts to full digital systems. That is, digital crossovers and bi-amping (or tri-amping with subwoofers).

What is that time frame for you to make the jump? Probably when you consider your next major component upgrade. Looking at a new amp or processor? Time to review your complete system before you lay out large dollars for something which leads down a blind alley or which will be outperformed by much lower priced products in the near future.

However, it must be made clear that our current digital system (we recommend only one at the moment) has its limitations. Multiple inputs? You need a preamp to handle more than one source. Home theater system? You need to splice in the digital system using the pre-outs of a preamp/processor. Just one more step. Some owners report an audible difference between the digital input and the analog input on the Behringer.

There is an analog section in our digital chain because very few processors or preamps output a digital signal for each channel. As several owners have pointed out, Meridian and Tact do plus probably a few others. There will be more to come shortly.

So our system now looks a little cobbled together unless you have a pure stereo system with a CD or DVD player as the source. In this case it is simple, just go out and buy the digital system. Period. Sell your existing gear, put the difference in the bank and enjoy your music all over again.

Newform Research is not really set up to supply readily available consumer electronics. We make loudspeakers. So for European and Asian customers we suggest you source the Panasonic and Behringer locally and we will help you with the setups.
